Bone grafts can be:
- AUTOGRAFT, when the bone tissue is surgically transferred from a particular location to a receiving location (the mouth) of the same patient.
- ALLOGRAFT, where the patients are genetically different. In this case the bone is acquired from a bone bank (either the Istituto Rizzoli Bologna or the Banca dell'osso di Treviso).
We apply two types of technique in bone grafting:
- Inlay grafting: the principle reason for the application of this technique is atrophy in the type IV bone - V according to Howell in the lateral sections - at rear of the jaw. We rely on this technique every time it is necessary to increase the volume of vertical bone, with the aim of implantation.
- Onlay grafting: Horizontal onlay bone grafts are used in the correction of subtle edentulous ridges (width of approx. 4mm), which have sufficient enough height for the implants to be positioned. Vertical onlay bone grafts are used in cases of bone atrophy, utilizing a bone residue clay which increases the height sufficiently for an implant to be positioned.
